Scholarships

The Bloomfield Educational Foundation is proud to present outstanding scholarship opportunities for our graduating seniors. Total scholarship dollars to date is $486,000 awarded to nearly 150 deserving students. If you’d like to start a scholarship fund to help make a lasting impact in the lives of BHS students and their families, while honoring the legacy of your family, business, or someone important to you, please contact the BEF here.

Below are the descriptions of these generous scholarship programs as well as prior scholarship winners.

This scholarship is given annually to a male and a female graduates of BHSSupports educational goals of Bloomfield High students, recognizing and honoring financially deserving students including general education and special needs students who have demonstrated a commitment to academics and personal growth.

Fred’s family and close friends describe him as an incredible friend and coach who left a lasting impact on every person who crossed his path. Frederick “Fred” Celluro graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1958, as a student-athlete who lettered in baseball, basketball, and football. As a life-long resident of Bloomfield, Fred received numerous awards for his service to the community.

To honor his memory and continue his mission of promoting teamwork and leadership through sports, Fred’s family and friends started these memorial scholarships, one for a deserving female and one to a deserving male student.

Jackie Courter proudly shared her love of art with Bloomfield school district students for over 40 years. Not long after her retirement in 2015, Jackie passed away after a long cancer battle. In late 2017, Jackie’s family felt that creation of this scholarship would be a fitting tribute to her life’s passion and her dedication to Bloomfield students. Gary Lordi, Jackie’s cousin, is proud to present the Jackie Courter Scholarship Award in the amount of $2,000.  It will be awarded annually for the next ten (10) years by the Bloomfield Educational Foundation.

Renamed in 2010 by a unanimous vote of the BEF Board, in recognition of Mr. Fetterly’s lifelong support and dedication to programs and activities of the Bloomfield Public Schools. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior, continuing his/her education after high school, a person of high moral character who demonstrates leadership and good citizenship, and a person who exhibits true school spirit and Bengal Pride.

Established in 1960 in honor of Mr. Foley, who was the head football coach for BHS from 1915-1950.  The criteria used to award this scholarship include: membership in good standing of the graduating class, demonstration of good character and citizenship, and the need, or lack of need, for financial assistance, is not a consideration in electing the best-qualified candidate.

A proud product of Fairview School, South Junior High School, and a 1970 graduate of Bloomfield High School, Gay Gerber taught Basic Skills, grades 3,4, and 5 at Fairview School between the years of 1974-2005.  Her passion for instruction of reading and writing dramatically impacted and positively influenced thousands of children and countless colleagues.  In her memory, the Gerber family recognizes Bloomfield High School graduates who were also graduates of Fairview School.  These students have demonstrated involvement and commitment to their community, service-related organizations, and activities.  These students have demonstrated effort in school-related tasks and have worked to meet their potential.  The recipients will be continuing their education at a college or other continuing education facility.

Awarded in honor of Ted Jasieniecki who was Bloomfield’s first 1000 point scorer in basketball. He was also an all-star pitcher and a respected leader of the class of 1967.  Ted died in November 1987 after a battle with cancer.  This scholarship is given annually to a male and female graduate of Bloomfield High School who demonstrate the attributes Ted was known to possess: athletic accomplishment, academic achievement, community involvement, uniqueness, and strength of character.  This is The Jasieniecki Family’s way of remembering Ted while also contributing to the community by providing financial assistance to young men and women pursuing a college education.

Joseph Paris, Jr., created The Sgt. Joe Paris Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1000, or in the event of two worthy candidates, $500 apiece, in memory of and in recognition of his father’s dedication for 30 years as a Bloomfield Police Officer, and for his bravery as a decorated World War II P.O.W.

Formed in 2015 in honor of the JPBA, an organization formed by the Polish population in Bloomfield in the early 1900’s. This organization made substantial contributions to Bloomfield schools, churches, local hospitals and civic organizations. In 1923, they built the White Eagle Auditorium which then became The Essex Manor. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who is continuing his/her education after high school, is a model student in the classroom, of high moral character and of Polish decent.

Began with Sheldon Seevak, the founder of the Real Estate Group at Goldman Sachs and Anne Itkin, his sister, who both believed in doing things the right way and that integrity is foundational to all relationships. In honoring these two individuals, this scholarship recognizes that people can be most successful and happy when they practice sound ethics in their lives.

The F. James White “True Competitor” Student-Athlete Scholarship is awarded annually to a male or female student- athlete.  Mr. White graduated from BHS in 1954. He played basketball for legendary coach George Cella and was a standout track athlete. He went to Springfield College, majored in physical education and graduated with honors in 1958. He received his Master’s Degree from Columbia University. He taught in the Bloomfield school system for 41 years with all but two of his years spent at Bloomfield High School, retiring in 1999. In 33 years as head coach of boys’ soccer he won 2 state titles, leaving a legacy as one of the winningest coaches in NJ soccer history. He coached the Lady Bengals basketball team for 18 years, winning a state championship in 1989. In 2009, he gave a speech at the annual BEF dinner entitled “True Competitor” in which he extolled the virtues of competition, particularly that of a BHS athlete.  To that end, his children established the scholarship at his Celebration of Life ceremony in 2019, which was held where else but in the BHS gymnasium, his home away from home.  Paid to awardee in 2 installments: one before the fall semester and one before the spring semester.

This award was established in 2023 by BHS Alumni Basketball players to help a deserving student achieve their dream of a college education.

This award was established in 2023 by the Board of Trustees of the Bloomfield Senior Housing Authority. It helps to support a hard-working student in need who wishes to continue their education after their high school graduation.

In November 2023, the Bloomfield High School Basketball Alumni initiated two scholarships with proceeds from a November get together.   Working in conjunction with the Bloomfield Educational Foundation a $500 scholarship for a current male basketball team member and a $500 scholarship for a current female basketball team member was donated.

Harry Moore, Captain and Right Tackle graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1958.  He has continued to participate in sports by being a North Jersey official for over 60+ years.  Harry has officiated more than 7000 games.

This scholarship is presented to a BHS lineman each year in honor of Harry Moore in recognition of his dedication on and off the field.  Harry continues to contribute to his alma mater by attending and donating each year to the senior awards program at Bloomfield High School.
